In early 2019, CodeSmith Technology were talking telematics with Electra Commercial Vehicles who explained their future issue with batteries that would no longer be suitable for vehicles but still had most of their capacity remaining and how they would have to be recycled.
CodeSmith Technology were intrigued with the challenge and wanted to see whether their knowledge of the telematics industry and software development skills could provide an answer to helping get batteries into the second-life industry.

Data is the most important thing that the second-life industry need to be able to use a battery is data on what the battery has done before and is still capable of. Currently this lack of data is why the industry relies on technical battery testing an expensive and time-consuming process or ignores secondhand batteries completely.

CodeSmith Technology approached Warwick Control Technologies to licence their patented technology regarding on-vehicle security, this was to ensure that the Battery Passport solution could achieve a high level of trust from the second-life industry to ensure the integrity of the service and the data being provided.

In mid 2019, CodeSmith Technology, Warwick Control Technologies and Electra Commercial Vehicles partnered together to apply for grant funding from the Niche Vehicle Network to develop the idea of Battery Passport into a physical solution. That project successfully completed in March 2020.

The Battery Passport solution is now commercially available, we are excited to work with manufacturers on promoting electric vehicle, helping lower CO2 emissions and growing the energy storage market.
